What was the first hotel in the world?

-There is no telling what the 'first' hotel was, but the oldest is known. But the first hotel is at least 2011 years old if you consider the Bible where Jesus was born in a stable because there was no room at the inn. An inn is technically a hotel of sorts.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the oldest hotel still in operation is the Hoshi Ryokan, in the Awazu Onsen area of Komatsu, Japan which opened in 718.

It dates back to AD 717, when an inn was built near a hot-water spring said to have miraculous healing properties. The waters are still celebrated for their recuperative effects.

The Ryokan has evolved through the centuries. Today, it offers100 rooms and can accommodate up to 450 guests. A new guest, on arrival, is garbed in a "Yukata", the japanese traditionnal cotton kimono. The hotel boasts of forty-six generations of owners.

The Dorchester opened its doors for the first time on April 18, 1931. Renamed InterContinental The Barclay New York, the hotel is one of the oldest hotels on New York's East Side.
